His name comes from the ancient Greek for “river horse” and it is an apt description for this semi-aquatic mammal that, despite his ample girth and stocky proportions, can still achieve speeds up to 19 mph over short distances. Herend’s artists have created the illusion that we are seeing the hippopotamus in his beloved aquatic home by surrounding him with gold water lilies that seem to glisten with moisture against the hippo’s more subdued gray fishnet.
